Second-hand in France: what to know

In France, second-hand goods go through car-boot sales (vide-greniers), flea markets, consignment shops, recycling shops and listings between individuals. A few rules apply to every seller.

Car-boot sales and flea markets

An individual may sell personal, used belongings at street sales no more than twice a year (article L310-2 of the Commercial Code). An online listing has no such limit, as long as you sell your own things.

Individual or professional seller

Occasionally selling your everyday belongings (clothes, furniture, appliances) is not a business. Buying to resell is. Since 2023, platforms report to the tax authorities sellers who reach 30 sales or €2,000 in a year (EU DAC7 directive).

Handing over the item

In person, the buyer pays after seeing the item, then gives the seller their 6-digit handover code: it proves the sale. Meet in a busy public place.

Scams to avoid

Do not click a payment link received by message and never share a code received by text. A buyer who wants to pay more than the price, or to send a courier “on their behalf” without meeting you, should put you on alert.
