How second-hand works in Mauritania

In Mauritania, second-hand purchases are settled hand to hand. Prices are shown in ouguiyas (MRU) and the item is paid for at handover.

Nouakchott’s markets

The Marché Capitale, in central Nouakchott, gathers fabrics, clothes, phones and household goods. For a phone or an appliance, compare the asking price with the market shops before you travel.

Paying and handing over

The buyer pays in cash once the item has been seen and tried, then gives the seller their 6-digit handover code, which proves the sale. Meet in a public place, in daytime.

Buying in another city

Between Nouakchott, Nouadhibou and Rosso, ask the seller for recent photos and a short video of the item working. Pay nothing before the item is in your hands: no deposit, no transfer to “reserve” it.
