Selling a car in Morocco: ownership transfer step by step
In Morocco, a car sale is declared on mutationvehicule.ma, then the file goes to Barid Cash or Al Barid Bank within 30 days. Documents and fees.
The steps, in order
- The seller and the buyer each fill in their part on the mutationvehicule.ma portal, opened by NARSA in January 2023.
- The deed of sale is signed and the signatures are certified. NARSA states that the new owner has the sale certified at the same time as the seller, on the “Formule BI” form.
- The file is lodged at an approved Barid Cash or Al Barid Bank branch, no later than 30 days after certification. The buyer gets a receipt valid for 60 days while the new registration card (carte grise) is issued.
The seller must also notify the administration within 15 days of the sale.
Documents required
- proof of residence (annex 6);
- the original registration card in the seller’s name;
- the roadworthiness test report issued for the transfer by an approved centre;
- for a car bought on credit: the contract signed by seller, buyer and lender, or the acquisition and “Murabaha” contracts;
- a release (mainlevée) if there is an objection or an outstanding loan on the vehicle;
- the receipt for stamp duty and service fees.
Minor owner, inheritance, auction sale, sale by power of attorney, company or several co-owners: NARSA asks for extra documents, listed on its “Mutation de véhicules” page.
What the transfer costs
For a car with a gross weight rating of 3,000 kg or less that pays the annual special tax, the fee is 50 DH per fiscal horsepower plus 305 DH. A 6 CV car therefore pays 50 × 6 + 305 = 605 DH.
Being late is costly. After the deadline, a 500 DH administrative fine is added, plus 10% of the fine for each month of delay.
Why declare the sale straight away
When the portal opened, NARSA’s director general put it this way: from the date of declaration, the seller has no further link with the car and no longer receives the offences committed with it. The buyer, for their part, knows the car is free of any objection.
Selling your car on Trokido
A car is sold as a local listing in the Used cars section: the buyer comes to see it and the deal is done by appointment. The transfer itself is handled between seller and buyer with NARSA. Trokido’s fees are set out on the Sell without fees page.
